Custom Dust Jackets Printing

You can create artwork by hand, scan or photograph it and upload images to your desktop. You can also use graphic design programs like Adobe InDesign and Illustrator, Canva, or Affinity Publisher.

Dust jackets include 5 key elements: a front flap, a front cover, a spine, a back cover and a back flap. You can feature author and publisher information, review highlights, and promotional material.

You can download PDF templates via the Instant Quote Calculator to help you place content in the correct order within preset guidelines to prevent text and graphics from becoming obscured or cut into during the trimming stage. The front and back flaps will fold inside your book, and the templates include fold guidelines so dust jackets can wrap around books without strain or tightness.

Bleed is an extension of artwork or color(s) to minimize unprinted edges appearing during the trimming process. Ensure your files include a 0.13” bleed before uploading. You don’t need to include bleed if no artwork or color(s) meet the page edges. Visit our Bleed support page or contact our team for help.

In your Artwork tab, drag and drop files from your desktop, upload them from your computer, or use file-sharing platforms like Dropbox or a web URL. Label your files clearly with names like "dustjacket", "dust-jacket", or "dust_jacket". If you’ve used a downloadable PDF template from Mixam to create your design, remove it before uploading. We accept many file types, but for dust jackets, create one spread and upload it as a high-quality PDF. We will print your design on a single sheet of paper. Ensure your files are in CMYK color mode before uploading, and visit our Color Guide for Printing for more information.

A multi-piece shipment refers to a single order containing multiple items. Once you add your first quote to your Shopping Cart, you can repeat the process for the same item or add a quote for another item via the categories at the top of the website. You can then upload your files individually to each item in one order.

Once you’ve uploaded files to your order’s Artwork tab, you can preview your files via thumbnails, online preview, and downloadable proof. Mixam’s automatic file checker will scan your files, but please also check all files manually, especially your downloadable proof, to review and fix issues before we send your order to production. Dust jackets will be shipped flat or in a tube (not pre-folded). You can add a light gray folding guide to mark the spine area inside your dust jacket, and it won't be visible once folded. Select 'Grayscale' under 'Colors (Back)' when placing your order, and our system will generate it automatically.

If your dust jacket arrives in a tube, gently insert your fingers into the center of the roll and twist toward the roll to loosen it slightly. As you twist, carefully pull the dust jacket out of the tube and unroll it slowly to avoid creasing the edges. To flatten, lay your dust jacket on a level surface and place heavy objects, like books, evenly across it. Leave the objects in place for at least 24 hours to ensure your dust jacket is flat before use. Please note that Dust jacket dimensions may vary slightly due to manufacturing variance. Ensure accurate book measurements, as Mixam does not require physical books for measuring and cannot guarantee exact sizing.

Hardcover book orders that include dust jackets have the standard 2.5” flap width. However, with standalone dust jackets, you can increase the flap width to 3.5”, and there’s no need to purchase or ship a book to Mixam for us to measure - you only need to provide your book and spine dimensions.

1. Position your book with the spine facing you.
2. Use your ruler or measuring tape and align the 0 mark to the left edge. Measure to the right side and note the measurement.

Once you know the fraction measurement on your ruler, the below will help you find the nearest decimal equivalent, which you can then type into the Instant Quote Calculator:

1/16" = 0.063", 1/8" = 0.125", 3/16" = 0.188", 1/4" = 0.25", 5/16" = 0.313", 3/8" = 0.375", 7/16" = 0.438", 1/2" = 0.5", 9/16" = 0.563", 5/8" = 0.625", 11/16" = 0.687", 3/4" = 0.75", 13/16" = 0.812", 7/8" = 0.875", 15/16" = 0.937", 1" = 1".

1. Position your book with the front cover facing you.
2. Use your ruler or measuring tape and align the 0 mark to the left edge. Measure to the end of the right edge and note the measurement.
3. Repeat Step 2, measuring top to bottom.

As the rigid outer covers for hardcover book covers overlap the inner pages slightly to protect them, subtract 0.25” from each measurement and select the final size on the Instant Quote Calculator. For example, if a hardcover book measures 8.75” x 8.75”, subtracting 0.25” from both will give a final book size of 8.5” x 8.5”.

Once you know the fraction measurement on your ruler, the below will help you find the nearest decimal equivalent, which you can then type into the Instant Quote Calculator:
